9/11 Commemoration event at the Carillon

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - September 11, 2011 will mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. In remembrance, HandsOn Greater Richmond and the City of Richmond are partnering with HandsOn Network and MyGoodDeed to participate in the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance.

The Honorable Dwight C. Jones, Mayor of Richmond, will kickoff the Commemoration Event at the Carillon on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 9:00 a.m.

Following the Commemoration, Richmond residents are encouraged to volunteer in tribute projects between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. alongside agencies such as the Richmond Fire Department, Richmond Department of Parks and Recreation, Neighborhood Resource Center, DLW Veterans Outreach and Training Center, Full Circle Grief Center, William Byrd Community House, Virginia Supportive Housing, and several others. Each agency will have specific tribute projects in which volunteers can participate.

HandsOn Greater Richmond created these volunteer tribute projects throughout the area to provide opportunities for hundreds of Richmond residents to honor the 9/11 victims and survivors and those who rose in service following the attacks.

The projects will take place from Saturday, September 10 through Friday, September 16, 2011. For a more thorough list of times and events, please visit www.handsonrva.org/HOC_9_11_day.

On Saturday, September 10, 2011, HandsOn Greater Richmond is partnering with NASCAR and will need 150 volunteers to hand out American flags, encourage race fans to write messages to military and first responders, and accept donations for NASCAR Unites wristbands, of which 50% of the proceeds will be donated to HandsOn Greater Richmond. In return, volunteers will receive free tickets to the NASCAR race, which will begin at 7:30 p.m.

During the week of Sept. 11, projects will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m., depending on the location. Richmond residents are encouraged to take 10 to 15 minutes out of their day to visit the assigned destination and create a care package for military personnel or dependents of military, or an emergency preparedness package for the Richmond community.

"We hope this significant event will inspire Richmond volunteers to come together and serve the community in honor of those lost on 9/11, the brave men and women who rose in response, and our local first responders," said Heather Markel, Corporate Program Manager for HandsOn Greater Richmond. The ultimate goal is to organize the single largest day of charitable service in U.S. History.

Visit www.handsonrva.org for more information about project details and how you can volunteer and honor the victims and heroes of 9/11.
