Storm impacts school openings

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - We are on your side as many of you continue to clean up after hurricane Irene.

You've been posting your questions and concerns to the NBC 12 Facebook page.

One posting we've seen a lot is about the start of the new school year.

This is looking to be the last weekend before school starts for many kids in the area.

Schools in Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico and Hanover start the first day of school on Tuesday, September 6.

Power has been restored to nearly all the schools.

There are a couple in Chesterfield and Henrico still in the dark.

The power is expected to be back on Friday, September 2.

School won't start until Wednesday, September 7 for students in King William County.

This is a one day delay caused by power outages and some storm damage.

Thursday, September 8 is the first day of classes for kids in Petersburg and New Kent County.

We're told power was restored to New Kent schools late Thursday night.

Teachers and staff will report Friday, September 2 to prepare for students.

Prince George is delaying the start of its school year until Monday, September 12th.
