Chesterfield, VA (WWBT)- Meadowbrook and Manchester both experienced winning seasons in 2010, but both lost a significant amount of starters heading into this year. Tonight, the two teams met on the Monarchs' home field to open their respective 2011 seasons.
Meadowbrook looked dominant offensively and capitalized on some Lancer mistakes on defense to earn the 49-7 win to kickoff the year. The Monarchs took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on quarterback Gerard Johnson's rushing touchdown and added to it in the second frame. Johnson found Devin Woodley for a 14 yard strike, and then added another rushing touchdown of 25 yards to give Meadowbrook a 21-0 lead heading into halftime. In the second half, the Monarchs picked up where they left off, as Johnson found Ahmed Fofana for a 15 yard touchdown play to extend the advantage to 28-0. Tyvonte Loney would add a 49 yard rush to make it 35-0 and the home team would roll from there.
Johnson led the offense to the victory, completing 6-of-14 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried nine times on the ground for 54 yards and another two scores. Loney led the rushing attack, tallying 120 yards on nine carries and a score. The Monarchs posted 364 yards of total offense, 258 of which came on the ground.
