MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - Hanover won its second straight Capital District championship last year. The 2010 championship was just a tad sweeter, as the Hawks beat Highland Springs in the process.
Now Hanover is the marked team in the Capital. But coach Josh Just doesn't worry about that too much. Ask him any long term question, and every other word will be "Patrick Henry" - the Hawks first week opponent.
Last year the team leaned heavily on Deane Cheatham, the Hawks senior running back is now at James Madison. Just feels confident in a triumvirate of backs to fill in. Rashard Thornton, Lamont Stubbs and Lawrence Jones will be called upon to carry the ball.
In charge of getting the ball their way will be junior quarterback Sam Rogers. As a sophomore, Rogers had a monster season, and he is the leader of the offense as a junior.
With a highly talented Varina, a confident Atlee, an angry Highland Springs, and newcomer Glen Allen, the Capitol District should be highly contested. But Hanover is the team that deserves to be the team to beat after their last two seasons.
