Tips for staying safe after Irene

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Many of you turning to our facebook page with your questions since so many are still without power.

A lot of people have been saying they smell smoke and call 911.

This has been keeping firefighters busy.

The smoke is believed to be coming from generators.

You should use your generator outside away from windows and doors.

There was a house fire over the weekend after one guy tried to use his generator in his house.

Refuel your generator once it is off and has cooled down.

Chesterfield County accepts debris at its convenience centers.

There's one at 3200 Warbro Road. That's off Genito, near Hull Street Road.

Another is at 6700 Landfill Drive off Ironbridge Road.

There is a fee. It's $7 a load for brush and leaves.

The centers won't accept stumps and brush more than eight inches in diameter.

The sun is up now, but the power in a lot of areas is still out.

The best thing we can all do is treat each stop light that's out as a stop sign. That way we all stay safe.
