CHESTER, VA (WWBT) - It won't be long before Friday nights across Virginia are filled with the sounds of high school football. And there is a new focus on working to identify and prevent concussions.
Dr. Larry Benson from CJW Sports Medicine regularly treats concussions.
There is no way to completely prevent these types of injuries if you are involved in a contact or semi contact sport. Maintaining hydration throughout workouts, wearing the proper equipment and proper tackling techniques are important though.
Players should be immediately removed from the field of play if a concussion is suspected. Players should not return to play until there are no symptoms for 7 full days.
Concussions need to be taken seriously and evaluated by a health care professional who is familiar with treatment of these injuries.
