RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Fay Towers, located in 1200 block of North 1st Street in Richmond, was evacuated due to the earthquake.
The building is 11 stories high and is home to some 400 elderly residents.
Fifteen of those elderly residents suffered minor injuries during the evacuation -- three were transported to the hospital – 12 were treated on scene for things like, breathing problems.
Lt. Shawn Jones with Richmond fire department tells me the stability of the Fay Towers building is in question.
He says a rear stairwell inside the building has buckled because of the earthquake.
Building inspectors were on scene trying to determine if the structure is safe for residents to go back inside. As of 5:50 p.m., Jones said the building inspector concluded that the building was structurally sound and safe for residents to return home. Tenants were expected to begin re-entering their homes by 7 p.m.
The evacuated residents were relocated to the Calhoun Center in Gilpin Court.
