Clarke, Johnson back to lead L.C. Bird

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - One of the best running backs and one of the best linebackers in the state reside on the same team in Metro Richmond.  They're both back to try to keep L.C. Bird's amazing district championship streak alive.

Running back Yahkee Johnson is one of the shortest players at any position in the district.  But at just 5'6", he's one of the most indispensable offensive players in state. With Bird's run-first offense, head coach David Bedwell says the Skyhawks will lean on him once again.

Bedwell says that Deon Clarke's 2010 season had one of the best seasons for any linebacker he's ever had at Bird.  Clarke, a Virginia Tech commit, will also play some tight end, but he is the playmaker on the defensive side of the ball.

Bird has won the Dominion District the last 10 years, and 22 of the last 34.  Last year, they lost to eventual state runner-up Hermitage in the playoffs.  With Johnson and Clarke, plus Collegiate transfer Lionel Williams, Bird has the makings of a team that can once again vie for a state title.

The Skyhawks open with one of the high profile games of the marquee opening weekend.  Bird hosts Thomas Dale on September 9th.
