Richmond, VA (WWBT)- While most college football teams will kick off their 2011 seasons on September 3, Virginia Union gets to take the field earlier than its gridiron counterparts.
The Panthers will play in the 2011 NCAA National Kickoff at Hovey Field when they host St. Augustine's College on Saturday, August 27. This game marks the first NCAA football game in the nation of the 2011 season. Saturday will also be the first time Virginia Union has ever taken part in the nation's first college football game of the season.
Michael Bailey and his team hit the field for a scrimmage Saturday afternoon to continue preparing for the season opener. Bailey and the Panthers played an offense vs. defense format and mixed a balanced number of running and passing plays during the session. VUU has been picked to finish eighth in the CIAA, fourth in the Northern Division, after a 3-7 campaign in 2010.
Virginia Union and St. Augustine's kickoff on August 27 at 6:00 pm.
