Back to school rally in Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The school year is just around the corner and Saturday the Richmond Sheriff's Office helped kids get ready.

They gave away school supplies to kids in need, some whose parents are currently in the city jail. Each child got a backpack full of notebooks, paper, pencils and crayons.

Organizers say they want to make sure the kids who showed up start off the school year with everything they need to succeed.

"We know how important education is and we know how important it is for those kids that are going back to school to have the proper materials to actually work with," said Richmond City Sheriff, C.T. Woody.

More than 700 kids showed up to this event last year.
