RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - We have new information on that massive, three-alarm fire in south Richmond. They've officially ruled it an accidental fire. The damage is at least a $100,000.
The fire started just before 3 p.m. Eighteen fire trucks were on scene along with 70 firefighters. Dozens of residents watched as fire crews extended ladders to roofs and weaved fire hoses in and around the apartments.
"It was bad, like super bad, it was all over the apartment," said Southwood resident, Valerie Garcia.
In the end, 30 people were displaced and 8 apartments were condemned. The American Red Cross said it was one of their biggest cases this year.
"Some of the units are worse than others. Right now our first priority is to make sure, those individuals who were affected have a place to stay tonight; if they lost any clothing we'll provide that for them tonight and any of the individuals who need counseling services or any emotional support we'll also be on scene to provide that as well," said Jonathan McNamara from the American Red Cross.
Residents had no choice but to rely on the American Red Cross.
"I mean, I'm worried I mean, pray for them, it's done, so only thing we can do is hope for the best," said resident Jessie Dee.
