Only survivor of deadly Chesterfield fire in court

CHESTERFIELD, VA - The early morning of December 21st, just a few days before Christmas, was quite tragic.

Firefighters, neighbors and even reporters were emotional after finding out that a mom and her 12 year old son were killed in the fire.

But the kid's father survived, and now that dad is facing a building code violation on top of losing his family.

Turns out, it was an electrical fire that destroyed the home.

Tracey Johnson and her son Jacob Layne didn't make it out.

Her husband and Jacob's dad, Kenneth Layne jumped from a second story window and lived.

Fast forward a few months to June.

Kenneth was given a building code violation by Chesterfield County because he did not comply with an order to either demolish or repair the fire-ravaged home.

So Tuesday, August 16th, will be Kenneth's day in court.

His hearing starts at 10 a.m.
