PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT) - It came down to the last few minutes, but both Prince George native Jackie Bradley Jr. and former UVA star Danny Hultzen signed pro contracts, and will not be returning to their respective schools.
Bradley had won two straight national championships at the University of South Carolina, and had gone to Columbia to prepare for his senior season if he didn't sign. But shortly before the midnight deadline, his all-star agent, Scott Boras, inked a deal with the Red Sox that included a 1.1 million dollar signing bonus. Bradley was the 40th overall pick in the draft, and had said since being drafted that he would've been happy going pro or returning to school for his senior season.
Hultzen was the second overall pick in the draft by the Seattle Mariners. His deal was worth $8.5 million, with a $6.5 million bonuses. The national pitcher of the year finalist waited until mere moments before the midnight deadline to sign.
