HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – A special treat is in the works for dogs and their owners in Henrico County. Soon, a new public dog park will be open in Varina, at Dorey Park, where work officially got underway Monday.
Aurora is a husky mix...and she likes running, if not mugging for the camera.
ANDY: "Look over there! Look right there."
Tamsin McDonald takes Aurora to Richmond's Barker Field three to four times a week...a good opportunity to get some fresh air and some exercise.
"She gets to run around, free, not in the backyard, which is good...she's got a lot of energy," McDonald said.
Barker Field is one of a small number of public dog parks located either in the city, or Chesterfield County. That is, until now.
Henrico County is building its first ever public dog park...at Dorey Park in Varina. Supervisor Jim Donati said the calls started coming in two years ago.
"A lot of the folks that requested it live in confined areas like apartment or townhomes or high density development, and there's not really anywhere for their dogs to run safely," Donati said.
Plans call for the park to go in a wooded area with water dispensers, seating, and other toys for pets and their families to enjoy. Donati says it's an example of government doing what the people want.
"Sometimes we can't, if it's too costly, but this was one that kind of fell within our budget to do here," he said.
Back at Barker Field, Allison Knapp of Glen Allen is visiting for the first time, and she's looking forward to the new park in the county she calls home.
"I hope it comes out, because we really need 'em," Knapp said.
Right now, the plans call for the dog park to officially open in late September. County officials estimate the cost of the new dog park to be about $155,000.
