HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A crime alert in Henrico where a serial shoplifter is stealing some unusual items. He's accused of stealing diapers and beer from local Martin's stores since April.
Police say this man simply walks in, grabs a cart, fills it up with beer, diapers and laundry detergent and then walks out without paying.
We've had a lot of comments on our Facebook page. As you can imagine, there are a lot of ideas floating around about why he's stealing this odd combination of items.
JJ McMoon headed into the Martin's Food Store in Short Pump Wednesday afternoon to get some diapers for his young son Miles. But don't worry, he said he plans on paying for them -- unlike what police say this man did.
He's accused of stealing diapers and beer for months. Still, many shoppers have some sympathy for this guy.
"At least he's stealing the essentials," said shopper JJ McMoon. "I'd feel a lot worse about it if he was just stealing the beer and you found out he had a baby. At least he's kind of thinking about his baby."
Wanda Taylor said the combination of beer and diapers is kind of funny, but also sad.
"If he really needed something, he should have asked somebody for something," Taylor said. "I would have given him some money to buy whatever he need."
Henrico Police won't say how many times this man has stolen from local Martin's stores or how much he's taken each time, but a few packs of diapers and a few cases of beer adds up quickly.
Paul Spera has two young grandchildren. He knows packs of diapers don't last long in homes with small children.
"(It) must be a stay-home dad that needs the diapers for his kids," Spera said. "(He) needs the beer to make it through the day."
McMoon said there's no excuse for stealing, but criminals have done far worse things than stealing diapers.
"It's kind of like robbing a bank with an unloaded gun," McMoon said. "Not excusable, but at least he has some sort of heart."
This man typically wears a Nike baseball hat, a windbreaker, cargo shorts and tennis shoes.
He also drives a silver or gray Jeep Cherokee with stolen Virginia tags AEE-3611.
