Police looking for five in brutal attack near VCU

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond Police are on the hunt for five people they are accusing of brutally assaulting a 22-year-old man.

This happened on July 31 inside an apartment building in the Carver neighborhood, not far from the Virginia Commonwealth University campus and the Siegel Center.

One of the victims friends talked to NBC12 this morning. He says, the victim's first name is TJ and that he is a VCU student.

He was with victim just hours before the attack.

Things are quiet outside the apartment building along the 800 block of Bowe Street this morning. But the buzz is all about the 22-year-old attacked in a violent home invasion.

The victim lives above Christopher Brown. The two are friends. The night of the attack- Christopher heard something strange coming from the second floor.

"I hear a lot of thumping, glass breaking and a lot of screaming going on," Christopher said.

Moments later, his friend came looking for help. "His face was really bloody, cuts on his face, it was tragic."

Police say around 4:30 on the morning of July 31, five people climbed up a pole to get on the second floor balcony. Then investigators say the five suspects kicked in the door. That's when two of the men involved started beating the victim with a TV and even a stove pan.

"This is the kind of attack that can't go unpunished," says Gene Lepley with the Richmond Police Department.  That's why police are asking for your help and giving us a good look at the pick up truck the suspects used to get away.

"It appears to be a dark green Dodge Dakota it may have sun bleaching on the roof, damaged window and a license plate with only a few digits. That makes this unique," says Lepley.

Christopher says his friend told him the suspects broke out a window with a 40-ounce beer bottle.

"Someone has to know. One of the neighbors maybe who would knows where he lives,"  Christopher said.

Other neighbors are thinking the same thing. "It makes you think they were selecting someone," said Devin Byrne.

Investigators won't say if the victim knew his attackers.

"I wish I could have done something about it. Helping him out," added Christopher.

At last check, the victim was still at VCU Medical Center recovering. Christopher says the victim has since moved out of the apartment he was living in. He's talked to the victim's family, who says the 22-year-old is doing okay.

Here are the descriptions of the 5 people police say are involved in this attack. The two men who police say did the assaults are between 20- and 25-years-old white men, about 6 feet tall,  with skinny builds. One has a blond buzz-cut, another has short brown hair with a goatee.

The other three involved are described as: a white man in his mid 20's, about 5'8" tall, with a stocky build and shoulder length dreadlocks.

The other two are women, in their early 20's, about 5'0" to 5'3" tall, with skinny builds and short brown hair. The females were last seen wearing shirts with bikini bottoms.
