Williamsburg, VA (WWBT)- Last season, William and Mary earned the Colonial Athletic Association Championship and this year finds the Tribe expected to do the same.
Jimmye Laycock's team has been picked to win the CAA for the second straight year and is entering camp embracing that prediction. 13 starters return for the Tribe, including some key playmakers like All-American tailback Jonathan Grimes, cornerback B.W. Webb and linebacker Jake Trantin. The team held its annual media day on Monday morning and fielded questions about being the favorite and the 2011 season.
Entering the year, there is some uncertainty under center. Senior Michael Paulus appears to be the logical choice, but after injuring his shoulder last season and undergoing surgery, it will depend on how he does physically in the preseason, according to Laycock. The head coach says that there are several players right there that could step in and fill the starting role.
William and Mary finished last season 8-4, which included a first round playoff loss to Georgia Southern. Most players said that they don't really think about that much anymore as a source of motivation, but remember how it felt and hope things go differently in 2011.
The Tribe will kickoff its season on September 3 at Virginia. William and Mary earned the upset win two years ago in Charlottesville over the Cavaliers to open up the season.
