Teen dies, adult hospitalized after double shooting

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) – Police in Petersburg are working on getting a search warrant as they continue to investigate a fatal double shooting.

It happened in the 100 block of Virginia Street around 2 o'clock Saturday morning.

Sixteen year-old Corey Lewis was killed just a day shy of his 17th birthday. Neighbors were planning a birthday party for him this weekend - now it will be a candlelight vigil instead.

Lewis' friends are trying to come to terms with losing a loved one.

"I was just so hurt," said friend Terri Mason.  "(It's) like it was a child of mine and it really did hurt and crush, it really did, and I can feel their pain.  All he kept talking about was 'my birthday, my birthday', and we said we'd going to make it happen for your birthday and this came up."

A 28 year-old man was also shot and suffered serious injuries and was transported to VCU Medical Center, but police say he is expected to be okay.

Charles Curry was asleep inside his home only a few feet away when the gunfire broke out. He says he saw Lewis laying in the street.

"With the lights and all the police, there was like 15, 20 police cars up in here," Curry said.  "It was just too close to home."

Neighbors say Lewis was respectful and outgoing.

"I'm going to miss him coming up on this porch saying, 'hey ma, how ya doing?'" Mason said.  "It really hurts."

Neighbors say they don't know what led up to the shooting, but whatever it was, wasn't worth a Lewis's life.

"Just a weird experience," Curry said.  "A young man's life is now gone for something petty."

Police say Lewis and the 28 year-old man also shot knew each other but won't say what their relationship to each other was.
