Midlothian, VA (WWBT)- Like most high school football teams during the preseason, Manchester has high hopes for what's to come during the 2011 season, but for the Lancers to experience success, they'll have to rely heavily on newcomers.
Coach Tom Hall's team graduated 32 seniors from last year's team that finished 7-3 on the year. Only one offensive starter returns, with nine starters returning on the defensive side of the ball, so defense will be Manchester's strong suit, at least at the beginning of the season. Three juniors are currently competing for an open starting quarterback job, all three of which bring different skills to the table, according to Coach Hall.
Getting the youth of the team to develop has gotten off to a great start. The team has put in a solid and consistent summer program, which was well attended by the younger players.
2010 was a successful season for the Lancers, as they finished 7-3. Their only setbacks were against Thomas Dale, Clover Hill and L.C. Bird, with all three losses coming by six points or less.
Manchester will kick off its 2011 schedule on Thursday, September 1, at Meadowbrook.
