Heavy police presence into the night at Va. Tech; no gunman found

BLACKSBURG, VA - The campus wide alert at Virginia Tech was lifted just before 3 o'clock. Three teenage girls on campus for an academic summer camp ---- reported the gun sighting just after 9 this morning.

They claimed to see a man with something that appeared to be a gun- covered by a cloth. The campus was immediately placed on high alert.

Police released a composite sketch of the person, as described to them by the kids from the summer camp.

"Officers responded to the area and found no one matching that description. We have not encountered anyone else matching that description or found that person. We have not received any other sighting's of this person, or any other information concerning this person," said Virginia Tech Police Chief wendell Flinchum.

Police interviewed several people today, even cancelled classes, but arrested no one and again, decided to lift the campus alert.

You will see police cars, both marked and unmarked, on the campus and officers will be sweeping the buildings.

Classes have been canceled for the rest of the day....the first day of football practice however, started at 5 p.m., after a brief delay.
