Charlottesville teacher killed in gunfire

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Charlottesville schools are mourning the loss of one of their own.

A teacher, visiting a friend in New Jersey, was shot and killed at a restaurant on Friday night.

Police say the Charlottesville teacher — with family ties to Glen Allen — was caught in the crossfire while getting some food at a Chinese restaurant in Newark, New Jersey.

She was there with a childhood friend.

The Times-Dispatch reports that Dawn Reddick — along with three others, including a 7-year-old girl — were victims of the shootout.

Reddick's dad, who lives in Glen Allen, thinks his daughter died trying to protect the girl.

Charlottesville school board members are mourning Reddick's death.

One member is calling this a tragic loss for the district. Everyone is in shock and grieving.

But the community is also remembering Dawn as quite a teacher who had a major impact on her students.

A Facebook page remembering Reddick has nearly 4,000 likes.
