CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A family trip to the Richmond area turns tragic for a Virginia Beach couple after their 5-year-old son drowns at an apartment complex swimming pool.
It happened Saturday at the Garden Springs Apartments near Centralia in Chester.
The child's mother, Ashley Pease said her husband was watching their son at the pool that evening.
Police tell me the boy was in the water, not breathing, when he was found.
They're investigating this as an accident.
Instead of getting her 5-year-old son, Nicholas, ready for kindergarten this fall, Ashley Pease spent the day planning the little boy's funeral.
"He was my world; this is hard for me right now. He was my world; he was very special to our family," Pease said in a phone interview.
Pease drove up from Virginia Beach this weekend to visit with family at the Garden Springs Apartments.
"I was upstairs, we were on the balcony...we were headed on our way down," said Pease.
Pease said her husband and a cousin were already at the pool with Nicholas, who didn't know how to swim.
"He was playing around the pool, he wasn't playing inside the pool," said Pease.
Police tell me the boy was found in the pool and he wasn't breathing.
EMS crews revived the boy and brought him to Chippenham hospital where he later died.
Police are investigating this as an accidental drowning and no charges are expected against the parents.
Pease said she's left with guilt of her son dying so young.
"He loved life and he was my son," said Pease.
The apartment complex staff could not comment. We reached out to the corporate offices and are waiting for a statement.
The boy's funeral will be held Thursday morning in Richmond.
