HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Authorities say a careless game of gun play killed a young Mechanicsville man and landed a Henrico woman behind bars.

Samuel Clarke III, 19, died Monday after being shot in the chest. Authorities later arrested Sharday Pleasants, 22, and charged her with involuntary manslaughter.

On Monday at approximately 1:40 p.m., Henrico County Police officers responded to the 100 block of Engleside Drive near Richmond International Raceway (Essex Village Apartments) for a report of a shooting.

According to police, Pleasants said that she watched Clarke empty a revolver before they began pointing the weapon at one another and pulling the trigger.

However, there was still one bullet left in the gun.

"To point a weapon at someone, pull the trigger, and think something's not going to happen, it's rather senseless," said Henrico Police Lt. Eric Owens.

Clarke's mother said her son has been robbed and shot at before, but was generally very happy.

"It's puzzling me because he didn't have a clue his life was getting ready to end," said Anita Julien, who added, "This is a weird, nasty nightmare and I wish it would just go away."

Pleasants is being held in the Henrico jail without bond and is due back in court in September.
