Varina Eyes Return to Success in 2011

Richmond, VA (WWBT)- The Varina High School football team has high standards year in and year out, but fell short of expectations in 2010.  This season, the Blue Devils return with an experienced and hungry group that has a chip on its shoulder.

Varina finished last season with a 6-5 record, including a loss in the opening round of the Central Region playoffs to Hermitage.  The 2010 version of the Blue Devils included 19 players making their first high school starts, but the inexperienced group still earned a playoff berth.  Still, head coach Stu Brown and the team felt they did not meet expectations.

2011 offers a fresh start for Varina as 16 starters return for the season.  Brown says that this is the most talented team the program has seen since his arrival at the school in 1995, but he hopes that talent translates to results on the field.  Four of Varina's players have received college offers, including University of Virginia commits Maurice Canady and Tyrell Chavis.  The Blue Devils will run a power spread offense and a 4-3 defense this season.

Varina will kick off its 2011 season at Dinwiddie on September 9.
