Man arrested for attempted robbery and carjacking


Shortly after 4:00 a.m., June 11, Virginia State Police and the New Kent County Sheriff's Office responded to the westbound Interstate 64 rest area in New Kent County.  Troopers and Sheriff's Deputies responded after a couple called 911 to report an attempted armed robbery and attempted carjacking that occurred in the front parking lot.  The male and female couple in their 60's from Pennsylvania, were approached by two suspects who asked for assistance with their vehicle.

In attempting to assist the suspects, the black male displayed a handgun and assaulted the male victim.  The male victim fought with the male suspect who fled the scene.  The female suspect also fled the scene.  The victim couple left the rest area and stopped at a business near Route 249 and Interstate 64 after calling 911.  A search of the area was conducted but the suspects were not located.

After developing leads, on June 17, Janay J. Battle, 23, of Chesapeake, turned herself in to Virginia State Police special agents. She was taken into custody without incident at the New Kent County Sheriff's Office.

Through evidence collected at the scene, Virginia State Police Special Agents were able to develop leads as to the identity of the male suspect.  The suspect was identified as Mahdi J. Holmes, 19, of Chesapeake.

On the morning of July 27, The United States Marshall's Service located Holmes in Chesapeake and took him into custody without incident.  Holmes was charged with the 6 felonies below and held without bond pending his arraignment.
