HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - Police are investigating a rape of a 6-year-old girl. They've arrested 45-year-old Maximino Garcia, a resident of Hopewell, and charged him with one count of forcible rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery.
While police investigate, we talked to Safe Harbor, a community organization that caters to victims of sexual abuse.
"Most 6-year-olds would not know the word rape necessarily however they will absolutely know that what they experienced is not right," said Stacie Vecchietti, of Safe Harbor.
Vecchietti says the chances of a rape victim knowing their attacker is normally high - making it even more devastating for the family members around.
"It's very likely that, that individual is somebody the family knows so the impact of that betrayal is also a part of what happens when folks are dealing with trauma that's happened," said Vecchietti.
The Commonwealth's Attorney says Garcia is now in jail at riverside regional, with no bond. Neighbors close to where police say Garcia lives didn't even recognize the mug shot.
"It's just very shocking but really this goes on so much I mean, it goes on more than you know," said Vanessa Reid.
Garcia will be back in court in September.
