RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Fleas and ticks have been awful this year and keeping them off your pet can be very expensive. A six month supply of Frontline Plus costs more than a hundred dollars. For the past few months, Walmart has been selling a new product called Pet Armor. It claims to do everything that Frontline does, but it's half the price.
I took it to Veterinarian Lori Pasternak to get her professional opinion.
"The active ingredients are identical," she said.
The active ingredient for both products is fipronil -- which affects the nervous system of fleas and ticks.
"The thing we don't know is the inert ingredients (on either product) and that's what distributes the product on the animal beyond the inert ingredients, I don't think that there's any difference between the two," Pasternak said.
But does it work? The reviews are mixed. Melva Armstrong says it works fine and saves her money, but Jessica Southers disagrees. She used it on two dogs and says they still have the same amount of fleas as before.
But the same can be said about Frontline. Much of it depends on your environment and your pet. Trees, bushes and wildlife all contribute to higher pest populations. The treatment wears off faster if your pet has an oily coat or gets groomed more often.
"I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be safe," Pasternak said. "If you want to try it, try it. If it doesn't work for you, you always have the brand name to fall back on."
Doctor Pasternak says if it doesn't work on your animal, you'll know quickly. Fleas will appear on the pet within 24 to 48 hours.
