Suspected robber eludes police for second day

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A suspected jewel thief is still on the run tonight, more than 24 hours after leading local police on a chase and shootout. Wednesday, police revealed the man they're looking for. He's from Pennsylvania...and so far, has been practically invisible.

Eric Roach, 40, of Philadelphia has yet to be seen. Not since Tuesday, when police say Roach bailed out of a getaway vehicle on Technology Boulevard.

Authorities say they're still looking for him, even though the police presence in Henrico was dramatically different compared to Tuesday. No visible air patrol or weaponry. No road closures or detours.

Still - neighbors like Daulton Carter say they're doing things a little bit differently now.

"Yeah, we be sure the cars were locked up, keys out of the lock of the house, that sort of thing," Daulton said.

Police say on Tuesday, Roach and another man took over a James City County jewelry store, and then fled toward Henrico County, where gunfire was exchanged with police, before the getaway car eventually crashed.

All told, one state trooper suffered minor injuries. The body of the yet-to-be-named second suspect ended up on life support for purposes of organ donation. And Eric Roach went on the run.

Daulton Carter says it's been a week unlike any other, and it's only Wednesday.

"We've never had any big crime like this going on, you know, some break ins, houses, garages, over the years, this is the biggest thing around here that I've seen around here happen," he said.

The lack of such a visible presence makes neighbors wonder if Eric Roach is even in this area tonight. Police won't elaborate on possible locations, except to say they're still looking for him. Roach is wanted on a weapons charge, and for eluding police.
