Arrest made in homicide on Dude Ranch Road in Hanover

Posted: Updated:

HANOVER, VA - A typically quiet Hanover County community is in shock this evening after a homicide Monday night.

Police arrested Michael Finney, 30, at his home in the 11100 block of Dude Ranch Road.  He's charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Robert Locklear, 34.  Police say the weapon was a shotgun.

Locklear lived on the 14000 block of Black Haw Lane in the Glen Allen area of Hanover, less than a mile from accused murderer Finney.

Finney's uncle said off camera that the two had been good friends for about a year, and he's just not sure what went wrong.

Things seemed normal today in the quiet community of Montpelier in the western part of Hanover County, but it was really anything but.  Around 8:15 Monday night, the home on Dude Ranch Road off Route 33 became the scene of Hanover's first homicide this year as two friends, Locklear and Finney gathered with their families.

"During the evening the two began to argue," said Hanover Captain Mike Trice. "Michael Finney then went into the home, retrieved a shotgun, came out on the porch and then shot Robert Locklear with a shotgun.  Family members of both the victim and the suspect were present during the shooting, and Mr. Locklear did pass away at the scene."

Family members of both the victim and the suspect called 9-1-1.  Sources tell us the argument may have been about Finney's four children.  Police say Robert Locklear was not armed at the time, although family members of the suspect tell us that he was threatening Finney in some way.

"At the beginning of the evening, it was apparently friendly, and during the course of the evening, there was a disagreement between the two that resulted in a violent confrontation," Trice said.

Finney is now charged with first degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony.  We searched and uncovered that he is no stranger to the law.  In the past few years, he's been arrested and charged with a number of crimes in Caroline County where he used to live.  That long list includes malicious wounding, reckless handling of a firearm, and destroying property.

Finney is currently incarcerated in Pamunkey Regional Jail with no bond.
