Hundreds of children clean up Henrico neighborhoods

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -- More than 250 kids took to the streets today to help clean up five different apartment complex in Henrico's East End.

The kids were outside doing this for more than two hours. It was all a part of the Henrico Police Athletic League Summer Camp.

All of the litter, piled up in the large amount of trash bags, all in the hands of the kids, including 5th grader Anastacia Little.

"It's kind of gross picking up garbage but at the same time it's okay because its for a cause and I'm helping to save the planet," Little said. She was helping to make this community a little cleaner, one piece of trash at a time.

Henrico Police Sgt. Kenneth Ragland helped organize it all. "Some resist it. Some welcome it. But, most importantly, is that we instill the aspect of community service and giving back."

This is the second year in a row these kids have gloved up to help out. Even in this heat, Sgt. Ragland hopes these kids will take the little short lesson they learned today, and do it again somewhere else.

Anatascia is on board with that plan. "It feels good picking up for them. It's just sad they don't pick up for themselves."

After the morning, the kids were able to go to Kings Dominion for a cool afternoon of fun.
