CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Word got around fast Saturday morning when we told you about a local church giving out free gas. The response was amazing. Hundreds of people came out for Mount Gilead Church's Praising at the Pump event.
Since 3:00 a.m. cars started lining up at the Kroger gas station on Hull and Hicks Streets in Chesterfield. Mary Kornegay and Trena Green were in line hours before the event began.
"The economy is rough so, yes, I'd sit out here for free gas," said Kornegay. "I'm a sub teacher and I like a break anytime I can get it."
"It's a blessing because gas is really high these days and I need it," said Green.
252 vehicles, more than 3,000 gallons of gas, in the end Mount Gilead Ministries gave out $10,000 worth of fuel.
"I had to see it to believe it," said Shannan Tillery. "So it's true, it's for real, I'm here and thankful for it."
"It's our way of giving back to the community," said organizer Jeff Conley. "It's a way making sure that we meet the needs of the community in which we serve."
Drivers left happy, the long wait was worth it.
"Money's been tight," said motorist Glyn Hall. "It's hard to fill up that tank on that Ford Explorer you know."
