Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Rain could not get in the way of the Virginia Hornets' home opener on Saturday night, as the club hit the gridiron against the Philadelphia Phoenix. The home crowd would leave happy, seeing the home team earn the victory.
Virginia got out to a fast start, thanks in large part to the legs of Wesley Watson. The running back broke off a 37 yard run on the Hornets' opening drive, setting up his touchdown to put the squad up 7-0. They would go back and forth with the Phoenix for the remainder of the contest, but earn the 21-14 victory.
Tonight's game just the second on the Hornets' ten game schedule. They'll return home next Saturday as Virginia kicks off against the North Carolina Stallions.
