Witness and cell phone's GPS aid police

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Henrico police say a quick-thinking witness and a cell phone are being credited with results after a woman's purse is snatched in broad daylight.

It happened around 4:15 p.m. Thursday in Sandston.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that police were called out to the 700 block of Branch Glen Lane for a purse snatching.

A woman was walking home when a man came up, said he had a gun and made her give him her purse.

He took off running — but a witness at a nearby ice cream truck thought it was strange that the man was running with a purse, so when he jumped in a car and took off, the witness took down the license plate.

Police caught up with the suspect leaving a home in the 2700 block of Carlisle Avenue.

The victim's phone, which was in the purse, had a GPS system that helped police track it's whereabouts.

The suspect was detained for questioning, but not charged. The investigation is ongoing.
