CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Chesterfield police are keeping an eye out for thieves who may be targeting your car.
But they don't want the car, they want what's on it. Police say the thieves want your license plate!
Corporal Scott Gordon, a crime prevention specialist with the Chesterfield County Police, told the Chesterfield Observer that thieves usually steal plates for two reasons — they can't afford them, or to commit other crimes.
Criminals also steal inspection stickers if they can't afford to make repairs to their own cars.
Corporal Gordon says its hard to prevent license plate theft, but there are some things you can do:
License plate bolts require a special tool to be removed. You can find them at any auto parts store.
Have the garage inspecting your car write the serial number and make of your car on the back of the inspection sticker in permanent marker.
Use a razor blade to lightly make an "x" into the back of the sticker once it's on the windshield. If they try to take it, the sticker will just fall apart.
The crimes didn't happen in any one particular area in the county.
Police say the best thing to do is to keep those doors locked and park in a well lit area.
