Air Support Takes Virginia Derby

New Kent, VA (WWBT)- A three year old underdog held off a charging favorite down the stretch to win the 14th Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs on Saturday night.

Air Support crossed the line first on Saturday, nipping Banned to win the Virginia Derby and take home the $600,000 purse.  The three year old Air Support, who started out of gate two, made a strong move down the back stretch, took the lead coming down the final straight-away and held off a charging Banned at the finish line.

Owner Stuart Janney said after the race that his team felt good about the event going into the race.  Air Support arrived at Colonial Downs Thursday morning and spent the next day and a half getting accustomed to the track.  Banned, meanwhile, had been at the track for more than a week, arriving early in hopes of gaining an advantage.

12 horses took the starting gates for Saturday's race, marking the largest field since 1999.  The event also got underway at 8:10 pm, which was the latest start time in the race's history.
