Midlothian, VA (WWBT)- Roger Newsom used strong putting and consistent play to widen his lead in round two of the State Open of Virginia at Independence Golf Club on Friday afternoon.
Newsom shot a five under par for the round, extending his overall lead to minus 12 for the event. He holds a six stroke lead over the rest of the field. Newsom birdied on three of his first five holes, including his first hole of the day at number ten. He held a score of ten under par at the turn for the tournament and tallied two more birdies on his back nine to gain two more strokes on the rest of the pack. Newsom has only bogeyed one hole through the first two days.
The leader's closest competitors come in a group of three at six under par. Three time champion Faber Jamerson is among that group, along with Bryan Jackson and Patrick Scheil. Five other players are eight strokes off the lead at four under par, including defending State Open champion Evan Beck and Richmond resident Jay Woodson.
The third round of the State Open tees off Saturday morning at 8:30. Newsom will begin his round at 10:30 am.
