Midlothian, VA (WWBT)- Anna Fuhr is a rising sophomore at the Steward School in Richmond. At 15 years old, she was not seeded for this week's Mid-Atlantic Clay Court Championships, but played like she should have been.
Fuhr began the tournament with a big bang, knocking off third seeded Kateryna Yergina in the first round. Yergina is VCU's number two singles player and was still alive in doubles action in the tournament as of Thursday morning. Yergina is also 13th on the VCU all-time singles wins list. The second round saw Fuhr top Leslie Hansen, a recent NCAA Division III quarterfinalist. Fuhr's run came to an end on Thursday, falling to 6th seed Li Xi, who plays at the University of Virginia. Xi topped the 15 year-old phenom, 6-1, 6-2, but it still marked a solid tournament for the high school sophomore.
Despite being young, Fuhr has already put together a very impressive high school career. She took home the state independent singles title as an 8th and 9th grader and will be looking for a repeat this coming season.
The Mid-Atlantic Clay Court Championships continue with semifinals on Friday and Championship Matches on Saturday.
