Newsom Leads After Day One of State Open

Midlothian, VA (WWBT)- The VSGA SunTrust State Open teed off on Thursday as both amateurs and professionals will battle for the championship.  Evan Beck returns as the defending champion and is near the top spot after one day of play.

Amateur and 2008 champion Roger Newsom holds a two stroke lead after the first round.  Newsom fired a seven under par 65 and used strong putting to shoot to the top of the leaderboard.  JunHak Lee fired a five under par score of 67 to mark Newsom's closest competitor.  A group of five players are tied for third at four under par, including three time winner Faber Jamerson, Sam Beach, Steve Serrao, Chip Sullivan and Patrick Scheil.  Beck leads the next pack at three under.  Jeremy Wells, Cameron Yancey, Chad Moseley, Cary Sciorra and John Stone are all tied with the reigning champion and within striking distance of the leader.

Round two will tee off on Friday at 7:30 am.  Following Friday's second round, the field will be trimmed down to approximately 70 players.
