Virginia Derby field set

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -  The largest Virginia Derby field in 12 years found out their starting positions today.  A field of 12 will compete for a $600,000 purse in the 14th running of the Derby.

Featured horse Banned will leave from post position 7. The Thomas Proctor trainee, who has won back to back graded stakes races at Churchill Downs, has a total of $297,000 in turf earnings. Banned was shipped into Colonial Downs last Thursday.

Watch Me Go, set to leave from post 12, is trained by locally based Kathleen O'Connell. The winner of the Tampa Bay Derby in March, Watch Me Go placed 18th in the Kentucky Derby, but has never raced on turf. He has not raced since May.

In his last start, Thirtyfirststreet, who drew post 6, won the $200,000 Lone Star Derby in Texas. The colt is the lone horse shipping in from the west coast.

Position number 10 was drawn for King Congie, who placed 7th in the Preakness Stakes.

The 14 race Derby Day card on Saturday begins at 5:00 PM.  The Virginia Derby will run as the 8th race out of the 14, at approximately 8:00 PM. Six races under the lights, will follow the Derby itself. Last post is slated for 10:35 PM.
