Bus filled with children overturns downtown

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A bus filled with children collided with a truck and overturned at 9th and Byrd streets in downtown Richmond at around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Police believe the bus had the green light when it was struck by the truck.

The truck driver has now been identified by police as 20 year old Christopher Blackwell.  He's been charged with disregarding a red light.

There were 13 people involved in the crash, 10 of which were children. Emergency crews transported seven children and one adult to VCU Medical Center, plus two kids and one adult to Chippenham Medical Center, and one child to St. Mary's Hospital.

The ages of the children range from 10 to 14 years old.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond said they were coming from the Southside Club on Bainbridge Street. They were on a field trip to the Virginia Holocaust Museum. All parents have been notified of the accident. We have been told that all of the children are in good shape.

We are continuing to follow this story and will pass along any new information.
