Beamer hits the golf course in Midlothian

MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) - Frank Beamer loves playing golf this time of the year. But he also knows that the window to hit the links is closing.

Beamer played at the pro-am today prior to the State Golf Tournament of Virginia at the Independence Club. 160 players from the Commonwealth are vying for the title of "Best Golfer in Virginia" this weekend.

The Virginia Tech football coach said Monday that his golf game is always at its best in July. But with practice set to start on August 4th, his time to play is almost over.

Expectations are always high for the Hokies, and they are again this year, as most publications rank them in their preseason top 15. But Beamer said that if his team is going to realize those expectations, they have a lot of work to do.  Beamer admitted that his team is going to need some freshmen to step up and play, and new quarterback Logan Thomas will have to feel comfortable under center right away. Still, he believes, his team has the chances of being a good football team.

Tech opens up play on September 4th against Appalachian State at Lane Stadium.
