RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Two couples were robbed at gunpoint while sitting in their cars.
The first armed robbery happened just before 11:30 on the 1400 block of Ashley Street Sunday night in Richmond. The second one was on the 2200 block of East Grace Street near the Church Hill overlook just an hour later.
Police are not saying they're connected just yet, but admit that these two armed robberies are similar. Both involved couples sitting in their cars when they were robbed. It's a hidden hot spot in the city of Richmond. The Church Hill overlook attracts many people looking for a bird's eye view of the city. That's likely what a couple was doing Sunday night there when they were robbed at gun point.
"It's kind of unfortunate," said neighbor Lenny Greenberg. "It's a shame, but it happens and hopefully no one was hurt."
Less than 24 hours after the armed robbery people still flocked to the area. Another robbery not too far away from Church Hill, has Richmond Police investigating similarities between the two crimes.
"It don't make you feel too good!" said Fulton area neighbor, Harvey Tucker. "What can you do other than just trust in the Lord?"
Tucker has lived on Ashley Street in the Fulton area of Richmond for nearly 25 years. It's where the other armed robbery happened just one hour before the one in Church Hill. He and other neighbors hope police catch the suspects.
"They need to go somewhere and go back to school or something so they can find them a job and stop going around and try to rob people!" said Fulton neighbor, Mary Mosley.
In both cases police tell us the robbers displayed a silver handgun and demanded cash. The only real differences were the suspect's ages, 17 to 21 on Ashley Street and 21 to 25 in Church Hill. Neighbors are just thankful no one was hurt.
"That's why I have my phone you can always dial 911," said neighbor, Alonzo Pye.
