Man stabbed to death in Lancaster County

LANCASTER, VA (WWBT) - Shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday, Lancaster County police received a report of a man down in a yard in the 1000 block of Irvington Road.  KPD was dispatched, and the responding officer requested a sheriff's investigator and the medical examiner.

The victim was identified as Joseph M. Waller, Jr., 54, of Riverwood Drive, Lancaster.  The preliminary investigation report is that Mr. Waller was at a party at a home in the 1000 block of Irvington Road; that he was involved in a brief altercation with another person; and that Mr. Waller left at about 1:30 a.m.

The local medical examiner's preliminary cause of death was a stab wound to the chest.  Mr. Waller's vehicle was parked nearby, and it was impounded for evidence collection at the Lancaster Sheriff's Office.  The victim's family arrived at the scene shortly before 8 a.m.; it is not known at this time who contacted them.

Mr. Waller's body was transported to the state medical examiner's office in Richmond for a postmortem examination.  Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to contact the Lancaster Sheriff's Office or Lancaster County Crime Solvers.  No additional information is being released at this time due to the nature of the investigation.
