New Kent, VA (WWBT)- The Virginia Derby is Saturday, July 16, at Colonial Downs, but one horse and his team arrived early to prepare for the race. Banned is a three year old horse that has won his last two races and will have ten days to prepare for the event.
Banned enters as one of the expected favorites and headlines the field of 31 nominated horses. The Kitten's Joy colt has won his last two races and has won his team $297,576 in just six turf starts this season. He'll get used to the surface and his team will enjoy a quiet barn for a little while before the rest of the field is shipped in. Head trainer Tom Proctor and assistant trainer Zack McDonald will work out Banned on Sunday on the track at Colonial Downs.
The draw for the 14th Virginia Derby will be held on Wednesday at Hooter's Restaurant on Broad Street in Richmond at 2:00 pm. 10-14 horses will make up the final field, and one track official says that the event may see its biggest field ever. Festivities will begin at Colonial Downs on race day at 5:00 pm.
