RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Nine out of 10 Americans own a cell phone. Then there are those of us who not only own a cell phone or smart phone, but we also own an iPad.

There seems to be a ever growing need to stay totally connected. And in our quest to stay connected we are sometimes disconnecting when it matters most.

It's certainly understandable that in this fast moving video and digital age, instant access to information is key.

But what happens when we get home, meet a friend for dinner or engage in a conversation with a colleague, and the device gets in the way of making a connection with them.

I think it's important to remember that when we arrive at home or engage in important conversations, we need to disconnect.

Put the cell phone down. When it rings or vibrates, answer it later. Don't check your texts or emails in the middle of dinner or as soon as you walk in the door.

Take the time to connect to the ones that are most important to you and make it a habit. Yes that's my phone vibrating, but I'll get it later. I'm trying to connect with you right now.
