UVA's Roberts signs with Indians

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Will Roberts is joining John Hicks as UVA juniors who will not be returning for their senior seasons.  The Maggie Walker Governor's School product signed with the Cleveland Indians Thursday.

Roberts went 11-2 on the mound for UVA this past season, with three complete game shutouts, including the first perfect game in program history. The righty finished with a 1.79 ERA, and opponents batted just .216 against him.

Roberts was drafted in the 5th round by the Indians, and will join the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, a short-season Class-A affiliate in the New York-Penn League.

Former UVA teammate John Barr and James Madison catcher and Cosby product Jake Lowery are already with the Scrappers.

Roberts became the sixth member of the eight-man Virginia draft class.  Juniors Danny Hultzen and Steven Proscia are the only Cavalier draftees still unsigned, and both were selected by the Mariners.

Players have until August 15th to sign with a Major League club.
