Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Goochland native and former Cavalier John Hicks has signed with the Seattle Mariners. Hicks was the organization's fourth round pick in last month's MLB First Year Player Draft.
Hicks played a valuable role for Brian O'Connor's Cavaliers during all three years in the orange and blue. During his junior season, he hit .332 with eight home runs and 59 RBI. The home run and RBI total tied for the team lead with Steven Proscia, a fellow Mariner selection who continues negotiations with the club.
Hicks will head to Arizona for a physical on Wednesday and then report to the Class A Clinton LumberKings. He is one of eight Cavaliers selected in the 2011 MLB Draft and is the fourth to sign. Hicks is also one of three UVa players selected by Seattle, along with Proscia and Danny Hultzen.
