RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Police say a 6-year-old Richmond girl has died after nearly drowning in a pool Friday night. The girl's identity has not yet been released.
Police say no foul play is suspected but a full investigation is underway.
The tragic accident unfolded around 5:00 p.m. Friday, at the Town and Country Apartments on the 1400 block of Barriedale Road. The teen who rescued the 6-year-old girl says she saw her not moving, in eight feet of water. People who live at the apartment complex have a lot of questions about how something like this could have happened with a lifeguard on duty.
"I picked her up and all this mucus came out," said rescuer Dajahniece Lewis. "She wasn't breathing."
Lewis is just 13-years-old and was the only one who jumped into the apartment complex pool to rescue the girl. An hour after the incident, the pool was empty with only the little girl's clothing at the water's edge.
"If that was my child, I mean, what would I do?" asked Lewis. "I would want someone to save her too!"
Police tell us there was a lifeguard on duty. One woman, who asked we not reveal her identity, cannot believe something like this still happened.
"The lifeguard was speaking to me at the time," said the woman. "He did not know what to do. Period. He was inadequate in his position."
"Did he know CPR?" asked NBC12's Evrod Cassimy.
"No he did not do CPR. He did not do CPR."
The teen credited with rescuing the little girl was still in tears after the scene was clear. One thing she's sure of is that the little girl should not have been in the deep end of the pool.
"I don't even know if she was able to stand in three feet," said Lewis.
Parents who witnessed the incident stress the importance of watching children by the pool and making sure they know how to swim.
"My daughter is a trained swimmer because I put her in swimming classes because water will kill you," said one woman. "I don't want my children in water if they don't know how to swim."
We were told at the scene that family members were at the pool with the child. The 6-year-old girl was initially taken to Chippenham Hospital in critical condition. Police say she died shortly after 2:00 Saturday morning.
