July 3rd fireworks at the James River

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - If you're staying in town this holiday weekend, there's a new fireworks show that promises to amaze.

Venture Richmond has produced a major fireworks display that will launch from Belle Isle and the Lee Bridge Sunday night.

Pyrotechnicians from Grucci are working around the clock setting up launching stations on Belle Isle.

"This is designed to be a 360 degree viewing so, we think you'll be able to see it from just about everywhere, from Manchester to Chimborazo Park and certainly Oregon Hill and lots of places around the area," said Lisa Sims of Venture Richmond.

Two 50 foot flatbeds full of fireworks will be sent out to about the middle of the Lee Bridge so Sunday from about 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. the Lee Bridge will be closed to drivers.

The river city is getting a chance to see some amazing fireworks thanks to Dominion Power and MeadWestvaco - two prominent companies with building near the James River.

"We're so excited about the first fireworks on the James River in many, many years, when Dominion and MeadWestvaco came to Venture Richmond and said would you be interested in producing this for us, we said, we would love too," said Sims.

And on Sunday, the fun will begin way before the fireworks take off.

"We're having free entertainment from Brown's Island of course, SPARC and Richmond Ballets Minds in Motion and the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra will all be performing free of charge starting at 7:30 Sunday Evening," said Sims.

The fireworks at the river this Sunday, July 3rd will begin at around 9:30 p.m. and go for a little over a half hour.
