RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - You'll want to re-think the way you get onto the Downtown Expressway if you need to get to Chesterfield County.
The major construction project set for the toll plaza will kick into high gear Wednesday. Construction starts at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland Street on-ramp.
It's the last entrance going westbound before the toll — if you miss it, you could be in a long trip back around!
Crews will have to close the ramp so they can get ready to work on the shoulder on the westbound side. That means you'll have to follow the signs to use the 2nd Street on-ramp.
"The biggest impact will be in the evening and that's when we see the highest amount of traffic use along this ramp," said RMA Operations Manager David Caudill. "They will see this and it will be confusing at first, but they'll figure it out."
Eventually the toll plaza will have an express EZ-Pass lane on the westbound side.
The ramp will be closed for about 30 days.
Crews will also be shifting the traffic on the westbound side slightly as well.
